Foundation & Support - the Key to Success

BASE

Crusher Run - A critical component of successful installation, Crusher Run is a one-inch dense grade unscreened stone used to provide foundation and stability. This product has sharp edges and compacts well. Miller Brick recommends a 6" thick base of Crusher Run and a 20% allowance for compaction.

LEVELING

Concrete Sand - is a very fine stone resembling the color of Mason's Sand, but coarser. Sand is used as a leveling agent and is recommended by ICPI: Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute

Stone Dust - a leveling product, Stone Dust is very similar in texture, but grey in color. It performs just as well as Concrete Sand and is slightly less expensive.

Miller Brick recommends a 1" thick layer of Concrete Sand or Stone Dust.

DRAINAGE

Washed Stone - used to provide drainage behind retaining wall systems, Washed Stone is clean one inch cut stone that has been screened.

Miller Brick recommends a 12" backfill of Washed Stone.

ESTIMATING

Length x Width x Depth = Cubic Feet

Cubic Feet/27 = Cubic Yards

Cubic Yards x 1.2 = amount required to allow for compaction

Products are sold in 1/2 yard increments. An allowance for compaction should be applied.

Example:
  • 10 x 12 foot Paver Patio
  • 10 x 12 x .0833 divided by 27 = 1/2 yards Concrete Sand or Stone Dust
  • 10 x 12 x .50 divided by 27 x 1.2 = 3 yards Crusher Run (includes 20% factor)

Example:
  • 25 x 2 foot Retaining Wall
  • 25 x 2 x 1 divided by 27 = 2 yards Washed Stone
